Description of practice
Applications of saline irrigation water are minimized to reduce accumulation of salts in the soil. This can be done by using water from precipitation more effectively to reduce the amount of irrigation required or by replacing saline irrigation water with better quality water from other sources.

Pipe irrigationPipes are used to draw less saline water from nearby rivers in order to minimize the salinization of agricultural fields. Pipes also reduce water loss by seepage during transport. |

Rainwater storageRainwater is stored for later use to minimize the application of saline irrigation water. This is useful in areas of irregular rainfall where irrigation is required during dry seasons. |

More reliance on rainwaterMore direct use is made of rainwater to reduce reliance on saline irrigation water. However, it is difficult to plan and other water conservation strategies also need to be used. |
